How We Install a Backyard Putting Green
A green that plays well depends almost entirely on the work you don’t see once it’s finished. Here’s the process, start to finish:
Your project manager talks through your goals, reviews the space, measures the yard and checks site conditions like drainage and sun exposure. You'll see turf samples as part of your written estimate.
We map out the shape, cup positions, contours, fringe and any chipping or practice areas around your yard and how you'll use it.
Grass, soil, old turf or other material gets removed. How deep we excavate depends on what's there now and what the base needs to be.
The area gets graded, the base goes in and everything gets compacted. This is also where contours and breaks get built in. A green that plays true is shaped in the base, not faked by loosely draping turf over uneven ground.
We shape the installation to manage water based on your property's soil, slope and runoff. Every yard handles rain a little differently, so this step is never one-size-fits-all.
The putting surface goes down and gets secured, then we finish the cups, seams, borders, fringe, rough and any adjoining turf sections according to the approved layout.
We finish the surface, brush it in, inspect it and walk it with you before we call the job done. Everything is spelled out ahead of time in a detailed written contract, so nothing about the scope is a surprise.

Synthetic turf is usually the more practical choice for a backyard green, mainly because it asks a lot less of you day to day. A natural putting green needs specialized mowing, irrigation, fertilization, disease management and regular professional attention to stay true. A synthetic surface skips the mowing and daily watering, though it still needs periodic cleaning, brushing and infill care to keep playing well.
